Cookie Policy

This page explains how WLSync uses cookies and similar storage technologies on the web app, and how the mobile app handles equivalent on-device storage. It's part of our Privacy Policy.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small pieces of data a website stores in your browser to remember information between visits. The mobile app doesn't use browser cookies, but it uses comparable on-device storage — see Section 4.

2. Cookies on the web app

When you're signed in, everything below is on - see the note above. Before that, a banner asks which of the optional categories below you're OK with, and nothing outside "Strictly necessary" is set until you choose.

Strictly necessary — always on

• Authentication — Firebase session data that keeps you signed in between visits.
• Preferences — your theme choice (light/dark) and your cookie consent choice itself, stored locally so they're remembered next time.

These aren't used for advertising or cross-site tracking, and can't be turned off — the app can't function without them.

Optional — on only if you allow them

• PostHog — product analytics that help us understand how people use WLSync (which pages get visited, what features get used).
• Google Analytics — traffic analytics (page views, referrers, rough location) reported to Google.

Neither is used for third-party advertising, and we don't sell the data they collect. If you accept all, that choice is remembered indefinitely; anything short of that (rejecting, or a partial selection) is only remembered for 30 minutes, after which the banner asks again.

3. Sentry (error tracking)

We also run Sentry to catch crashes and bugs. It doesn't set marketing or tracking cookies and isn't part of the "optional" list above — we treat it the same as strictly necessary infrastructure, the same way a host's own error logs would be.

4. On-device storage in the mobile app

The mobile app uses Expo SecureStore and AsyncStorage instead of cookies:

• SecureStore (encrypted) — your Netflix session, used only to fetch your own viewing history for sync. It stays on your device and is never sent to WLSync's backend.
• AsyncStorage — app settings, sync preferences, and cached data that make the app faster and work partially offline.

The mobile app doesn't currently show a cookie-style consent prompt — PostHog there follows the same opt-in convention documented in Privacy Policy.

5. Managing cookies

While signed out, use "Manage cookie preferences" above at any time to change which optional cookies are allowed. Signed-in accounts have this locked to "on" for everything (see Section 2) - sign out to change it, or delete your account entirely via Delete My Account. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser's own settings, though blocking strictly necessary cookies will likely prevent sign-in from working. On mobile, you can clear stored data — including your Netflix session — from Settings within the app, or by uninstalling the app.

6. Changes to this policy

If our use of cookies or on-device storage changes materially, we'll update the "Last updated" date above.
